This workshop will give participants a basic framework and some tools to train interns from diverse backgrounds. The full Training Researchers and INterns for Upcoming Professors (TRAIN-UP) program provides participants with a new framework to hire, teach, train, and supervise research trainees. This framework integrates education, management, and leadership theory that is applied to the research culture. The program includes a combination of lectures and activities to apply the TRAIN-UP framework to one's own situation.

Goals:

The goal of the TRAIN-UP Mini program is to provide a preview of the tools for research trainees to:

  1. Effectively train, supervise and mentor interns

  2. Work with diverse interns, where diversity is defined in terms of work styles, learning styles, career goals and educational goals as well as gender, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity.

Course Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, research trainees should be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate their expectations as well as their work style.

  2. Apply the TRAIN-UP framework to resolve issues related to training, supervising or mentoring new research trainees of different personality types.

  3. Describe approaches to effectively mentor trainees while creating a supportive climate in the lab.
